Napoleon III Style Carved Twisted Rope Sofa
This exceptional piece of hand-carved frame sofa, in a robe effect, is an extremely rare find.
When this piece was sourced, one of the legs was completely broken off. This has been fully restored by a professional woodworker. The upholstery is in very good order but there are two small red marks that could not be cleaned off.
Seats of this kind, their frames imitating twisted rope, were fashionable during the third quarter of the nineteenth century. This type of carved furniture was often associated with the work of the Parisian upholsterer A. M. E. Fournier, who worked at the Boulevard Beaumarchais, from 1850 onwards. Fournier was famed for his exceptional upholstered pieces. A set of similar stools, based on a design by the tapissier A.M.E. Fournier, is at the Château de Compiègne.
